"Understanding Modern Art" presented by art historian, Professor Nancy G. Heller

October 27, 2017

In the first of a series of lectures on Modern art, Dr. Heller explored the foundations of Modern art beginning in the first decade of the 20th century. Another four lectures will take us through to the third quarter of the 20th century.

"New Art for a New Century"

Revolutionary developments in France and Germany, during the first decade of the 1900s.  Fauve art (exemplified by the glorious color and joyous shapes of Henri Matisse) and Expressionism (powerfully emotional prints, painting, and sculptures by Ernst Ludwig Kirchner and Kaethe Kollwitz).  Sources for these new approaches and their influence on later generations of artists.
